I didn't think things could get worse than life in the cages. Then they give me to him...

The Champion of Keel is a pit fighter--and apparently the best they have. He's given certain perks. Females, for instance. But I'm his first human female.

This big alien is all twisted up inside. He was taken long ago and knows nothing but fighting. Well, there is one other thing he knows, and he believes it is his right to take it. It doesn't occur to him that those given to him are anything other than gifts for him to use.

They don't fight him.

He's about to get a big shock, though, because I may be human and small, but I'm a scrappy little thing, and I will absolutely fight that big savage if he comes near me. When he comes near me.

At least I plan to...but then I start to feel sorry for him, to see something in him besides a scarred, brutal fighting beast, and my big heart begins to soften.

And surprising me perhaps more than him, my body wakes up, and I'm no longer sure I want to fight him.

Then I find out his next big fight is his most challenging yet, and if he doesn't survive it, I'll be given to his opponent. But worse even than being given to another fighter is the fear of losing the one I already have.

I slam into him because he doesn’t move, and he is so big, so fucking big, that he barely seems to notice the collision. I immediately go for the wound I gave him the first time I attacked him—the cut over his ribs. He has had it tended and covered, but I ram my fist against it, once, twice, three times, gratified when he grunts in pain.

He grabs my wrist and slams me to the ground, then falls on top of me, forcing the breath from my lungs. My lungs cannot expand with the weight of him crushing my chest, and I struggle to breathe as he forces my arms above my head. “I know there’s more in there than death, Xyliph. I see those cold eyes flicker. I have control of you now. The next time the opportunity presents itself, I want you to consider carefully before acting upon the bloody desires of your murderous heart.” He leans closer and his breath fans my cheek. “You are strong, fast, and one bad little bitch—but I am better than you. Don’t make me prove it.”

We're having some very cool fall weather right now--it was 64 degrees in my house when I woke up this morning, and I was seriously considering turning on the heat! But I brought out a little electric heater instead, as I'm not sure the warm weather will be letting go just yet. Likely, it'll still be mild around Christmas in my neck of the woods. 😒

 I'm thinking about moving up North, where they still get a good snow every year and the seasons are still clearly defined and as they should be.

He crosses his arms and leans against the bar. “Why are you on Stygian, Vyxyn? And where’d you get that name?”

“Badass until you hear the rest of it.” I grin and look regretfully at my swiftly disappearing sandwich. “My mom was eccentric. My full name is Vyxyn Axyl Mycah Pyka. What a shit name, right? She wanted my initials to spell out Vamp. That was what she called me.”

“Why?”

“She was obsessed with vampires. She believed they were real and that someday, a handsome bloodsucker with fangs, a sexy accent, and loads of money was going to come whisk her out of the trailer park and take her to live in his gothic mansion.”

He laughs hard, then looks surprised that he’s so amused. “I’m sure you miss her.”

I lose my smile. “No.”

He doesn’t ask why not. “Things will get violent before long.”

I nod. “Things usually do. But Zac can handle anything they throw at us.”

“Zac isn’t the only one of us who can fight, little Vyxyn,” he says dryly.

I lean closer. “Does he have a girlfriend back…wherever he comes from?”

“A mate?” He shakes his head. “He does not. Nor,” he adds, “do I.”

“Nice guy like you, you’ll find someone.”

He looks heavenward. “That’s what I keep hearing.”

“He’s a scary man. A shifter. That’s crazy.” I squint at him. “He says he’s dangerous.”

“Extremely.”

“I mean…to me.”

He lifts an eyebrow. “Extremely.”
